Most people who open The Complete Encyclopedia of Needlework will say, on seeing the title of this chapter, that this information about sewing by hand is superfluous, especially in these days when the machine so often takes the place of the hand in sewing. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars The one and only indispensable needlework book, 16 Oct 2002
By A Customer
I actually first discovered this book in a book fair in France in it's original format (Mme de Dillmont wrote a number of works for DMC - the needlework supplies manufacturer), and was fascinated by the sheer breadth of information it contains. It is undoubtedly the last book still published today to deal with a great many techniques which were once widely known and used. Although it may seem complicated at first, instructions are detailed and easy to follow and the hundreds of beautiful and varied projects contained in the book are a welcome change from the very standardized fare available in most current needlework books. Originally written for beginners, the decrease in general knowledge of and expertise in many techniques means that this book is as perfect for advanced needleworkers as for learners.
The only possible problem with this book is that you'll never need to buy another needlework book again!

I still have my mother's battered 'pocket encyclopedia' which is is older than 1940. I have a more recent standard edition. For getting you started on a new technique, there is nothing better than this
