Product Description

Book Description

One of the most imaginative artists in American popular culture, Jaime Hernandez has sold over 1.5 million comic books since 1982. Locas is the story of Maggie, a bisexual Mexican-American woman coming of age during the 1980s Southern California rock scene, when the anarchic world of punk and new wave emerged. Hernandez's naturalistic storytelling and mastery of body language and facial expression, as well as his brilliant depiction of barrio life with its class and racial tensions, make Locas one of the great American novels of the last 25 years, graphic or otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 27 Jul 2006

If you missed out on LA 80's punk scene as most of us did - then you can capture a taste here but its about being young, wild, dazed, confused and when friends really were everything...plus rock and roll, crazy super heros and of course Maggie and Hopey the greatest female characters is the entire comic-verse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does not come better, 12 Aug 2009
By David Hampson "kuma" (Reading, Berkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Maggie and Hopey are some of my best friends from my later formative years and it is great to get this big collection of their adventures up to a point where I lost track of them, rather like they do half way through the book - strangely too it is a band responsible, Hopey goes off on tour and leaves Maggie behind, and Jaime Hernandez "quit" comics to become a less successful rock star along with his brother Beto who writes the other half of Love and Rockets.
Viewing it all over a big Moby Dick sized volume lends it all a new quality than sporadically finding a new issue every few months and the themes and the characters really come into their own - things like Maggie's relationships with her wrestler Aunt and precocious half-sister, events in Maggie and Hopey's past which shaped their characters.
You can't go wrong with this book, it is one of the great work's of literature of the 20th century and I can't imagine anyone not being deeply moved by this book.
