Product Description

Book Description

Before Joe Sacco crafted his two major works of cartoon journalism, Palestine and Safe Area Gorazde, he created a number of shorter pieces, all collected here in their entirety. A fantastic primer to Sacco's work, this collection includes a history of aerial bombing that targets civilian populations, the story of his mother's harrowing experiences in Malta in WWII, and most personally, 'How I Loved the War', Sacco's impassioned but sardonic reflection on the Gulf war.

About the Author

Joe Sacco was born in Malta. He won an American Book Award for Palestine. He is also the author of Safe Area Gorazde. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joe Sacco - "Cartoon Genius", 2 Jan 2004
By D. J. Warren "bergerac_dan" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Notes from a Defeatist (Paperback)
Joe Sacco's infamous "Palestine" was a landmark in non-fiction graphic novels, combining historical facts and journalist reporting with an unabashed autobiographical approach. I bought and finished it recently. For Christmas this year a very good friend who had noted my fascination with Palestine picked up this for me, Joe Sacco's "Notes From A Defeatist". It's a collection of lots of his eariler works, ranging from comic strips to short stories, some autobiographical, some comical, some based on once-only characters. In parts funny, in parts tragic and saddening, and some parts enraging (Joe Sacco's work about aerial bombardment of civilian targets was particularily harrowing) Sacco still manages to move not only between emotions with ease but also through vastly different styles. From his fantastically detailed pictures in "I am a Cartoon Genius" to his downright cartoony manifestations, from olde english prose and rhyme to text heavy work, with a single image each page. It's a fascinating and enlightening collection of his earlier work and shows Sacco's range as an artist and also his talent as a story teller and satirist.

I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone who has read or intends to read "Palestine". It's a superb and inspirational introduction to Joe Sacco's work, and has left me thirsting for more.

Thumbs up! Buy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth borrowing let alone buying, 16 Jun 2009
This review is from: Notes from a Defeatist (Paperback)
It's too dull to merit a real trashing but I feel the need to spend a couple of minutes giving it a slightly disinterested slating.

The artwork feels vaguely derivative of better cartoonists, at times it comes across as a bad pastiche of Robert Crumb's style of drawing. The stories when they aren't pointless, mundane and self-obsessive, feature characters that an imbecile would avoid creating for fear of ridicule.

The only chapters worth a glance are When Good Bombs Happen to Bad People and More Women, More Children, More Quickly. The former is interesting at first but goes on far too long after it's point is made. It consists of a lengthy chain of quotes but I'll give Sacco credit for the research involved. The latter story is by far the best thing in the book but hardly essential reading.

I've not read anything else by Sacco, perhaps his good reputation is justified by his other works. On the strength of Notes From a Defeatist, I'm not inspired to explore them.
