5.0 out of 5 stars terrifying!, 27 Nov 2008
There are two stories in the book. One is a fairly light-weight, creepy tale of time travel and WW2. The title story is amazing though - the scariest story I have ever read. It starts with the down-to-earth voice of a stone-mason, and brings you into his world - then the supernatural, unexplained, grim stuff starts happening... If you don't mind being scared, if you enjoy it even - then this story might be for you. As always with Robert Westall, it's very well written, memorable, charismatic.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most gory books i have ever read, 13 July 2001
By A Customer
In this book I have experienced every genre I can think of. It has moments of love, violence, gore, and loads of others. Robert Westall is the most skilled writer i have encountered as he tends to speak things as they are, as other writers tend to leave out the gore, love, and bad language. In this story the gargoyle is evil and it makes bad things happen, to friends and family (and even makes total strangers die!). I think i should stop telling you about this book and let you read it yourselfs. And you will discover the mystery behind the gargoyle...
