5.0 out of 5 stars A book to lose yourself in completely., 15 Nov 1999
By A Customer
With finely drawn characters, a deep sense of place, well-plotted and intelligently written, Archer Mayor has created a series for those of us who think and love to get involved emotionally with our "hero." Joe Gunther is a small-town cop with a sense of justice, at whatever cost. If you have ever had a desire to see what Vermont is like, although it is about the seamier side, this is a great way to do it. I visited the town this book was written about, and ate at the restaurants. The burned out house is there and as described. As is the food at the restaurant. When you go with Gunther into the fire, you breathe the smoke, you are blinded by the blackness... because Mayor is also a firefighter (emergency medical technician, ski patroller, town constable among others), and writes convincingly of his adventures. This is the second in the series. If you can read them in order, you can follow Joe's relationships with his partner, Gail, as well as his fellow Brattleboro officers. Good reading!
