Product Description

Product Description

This book addresses the two-stroke cycle internal combustion engine, used in compact, lightweight form in everything from motorcycles to chainsaws to outboard motors, and in large sizes for marine propulsion and power generation. It first provides an overview of the principles, characteristics, applications, and history of the two-stroke cycle engine, followed by descriptions and evaluations of various types of models that have been developed to predict aspects of two-stroke engine operation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly rated, nice blend of theory and application, 30 July 2001

As recent and as detailed as any book could be, uses Susuki Yamaha Kawasaki Rotax and Orbital engines as examples. Seems to give more basic data on research compared with others. There are very good chapters on Gas Exchange Fundamentals and Combustion. Other topics are Intake and Exhaust design, Emission Control, and Scavenging. Scavenging is discussed extensively, 50 pages on experimental methods plus a further 30 pages on mathematical modelling. Lest you think that it is all about motorcycles, the Orbital three cylinder two-stroke supercharged diesel is featured as often as any. There is useful discussion on how the jet of gas from the transfer port is affected as the port is progressively opened by the piston. Having read this, you wonder if you might not be able to take a first step beyond the published 2stroke tuning data.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books in two stroke engine, 18 Sep 2008
By W. H. Lam - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The description in the book is concise, well presented and able to understand even the readers have no strong fundamental background in two stroke engine.

The book divided into nine chapters. The first chapter gives an overview to the two stroke engine and followed by a brief of its history. The second to fourth chapters describe the gas exchange process. Chapter two introduces the terminology and the engine parameters and then reviews the current gas exchange process including various scavenging and charging methods. Chapter three and chapter four describe the experimental and numerical methods to quantify the parameters in gas exchange process. Chapter five illustrates how the port and valve works in the gas intake and exhaust control system. Chapter six and chapter seven describe the engine combustion and the gas emission respectively. Chapter eight presents the friction, lubrication and wear of the engine. Chapter nine reviews the operating characteristics of the common type engine with different design. The effects of the changes of design to the operating characteristic were discussed by relating to the concepts from chapter one to eight.

Many valuable pictures and figures are presented in all the nine chapters. The book is a very useful material for the researchers in two stroke engine.
