Written with a building-block approach to learning to fly a helicopter, this comprehensive textbook shows pilots the underlying foundation of why the helicopter behaves the way it does. Discussing the complexities of helicopter flight in clear terms, this book explains the aerodynamic factors associated with rotor stalls, mast bumping, and wind effect. Also included are testing requirements and complete helicopter theory that every pilot can grasp and use to best master this type of aircraft.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clearly explained and comprehensive, 3 Feb 2003
I used this book to study for my PPL(H) exams - both technical and performance and planning, but there is a greater detail provided in the book than is required by these exams. It would probably be suitable for CPL exams too.
The author tries to make this fairly technical topic accessible to those who don't have a background in physics. This is helped by the authors own background. It is apparent that he learnt the physics involved with helicopter flight whilst learning to fly. Unfortunately whilst this is a boon for clear explanation it does mean there are some basic mistakes that occur in this book - thankfully they are few.
The book covers the obvious topics - how a helicopter actually flies, but also some less expected ones - for example, mountain flying.
I would recommend this book to anyone thinking of studying for their PPL(H) exams and also to those just curious about the details of how a helicopter manages to stay in the air. There is nothing more complex than GCSE physics involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helicopter pilot's bible, 20 Mar 2008
This book is the technical bible for aspiring helicopter pilots. It is essential reading for pilots studying for either a private or commercial helicopter pilot's license. It goes into more detail than any similar book, and the material is explained in a clear manner. Although the detail is more than would be required to pass a private helicopter license technical exam, the extra information presented is still useful and informative.

To sum up, if you want to to learn to fly a helicopter, read this book. The book won't just help you gain your license - one day it may save your life.
