In 1970, Chris Bonington and his now-legendary team of mountaineers were the first climbers to tackle a big wall at extreme altitude. Their target was the south face of Nepal's Annapurna: 12,000 feet of steep rock and ice leading to a 26, 454-ft. summit. As serious armchair climbers will tell you, Annapurna South Face is better than all but a handful of equally gripping classics. One could also argue that all that has happened in the big mountains in the past 30 years has come out of this expedition and out of this book. Bonington and his teammost of whom subsequently died in the mountainsrepresented a kind of "greatest generation" of modern mountaineers. They pioneered a new, bolder approach to high altitude climbing, and this book is about how they hit the big time.

This was the first of Chris Bonington's books that I ever read, picked up in a bookshop (in its original edition)out of curiosity. I'd never climbed rocks or mountains myself - I just thought it looked like a good story. And it was - I was absolutely gripped by it, fascinated by the bravery and tenacity of the climbers and the hostility of the environment they faced. I spent the next few years tracking down every book I could find on mountaineering and rock climbing and read everything Chris Bonington had written.

Bonington is an enthusiast first and foremost. When he was writing books like this he was often criticised by his climbing peers for being obsessed with organising, raising money and publicising his exploits. Yet what comes through is that all this was merely a way to enable him to climb and explore, to achieve the summits that had not yet been reached or by routes not yet ascended.

In hindsight this isn't Chris Bonington's best book, but it is still well worth reading - unless, that is, you have a fear of heights...

This book still reads well after more than 30 years. Written from Bonnington's perspctive as leader, he provides not only the necessary detail of the expedition, but concentrates on the affect on individual morale, motivation and the physical endurance required to accomplish technical climbs at high altitude. There is also a superb chapter penned by Dougal Haston, and an insight into the enigmatic Don Whillans. Dont miss it!
