Review

"Illuminates the paradox in which one must hold back to survive but risk all to live." - Diane Lefer, author of Radiant Hunger; "Deeply satisfying... As smart as it is sexy." - Karl Woelz, co-editor of Men on Men 2000; "Truly groundbreaking... A brilliant author." - Sydney Lea, founding editor of New England Review/Breadloaf Quarterly

Product Description

When Hedonism can only Take you so Far...From the cruising spots of Boston to the gay tourist scene in Amsterdam, Dave Miller trysts dangerously with every available man. Yet even during scorching sexual encounters with strangers in public parks and gay baths, Dave is haunted by images - some perverse, some nostalgic - of his long-dead family. Raised by his Orthodox, Holocaust-survivor grandmother, Dave's tale of sex and death is told in two interweaving chronologies, following one man's journey into the darkest recesses of his own tortured soul and body. But will he find redemption at the journey's end?

This review is from: The Limits of Pleasure (Paperback)
Like a passionate lover, once this novel is tasted, it must be devoured whole. I read this marvelous book in a weekend. Wicked wit mixed with hot sexual escapades and rich insight into the angst of a man who believes his sexuality denies him his Jewish birthright. What amazes me most is that I started out disliking the main character immensely because he's arrogant and sexually predatory. But I gradually grew to understand him, even, I daresay to love him, and I now wish that I could embrace him and offer comfort. Quite a literary feat to create a fictional character who is so alive. One can't wait to see what else this Jaffe chap (the author) will come up with in future.
