4.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it says on the tin, 17 Sep 2002
Before reading this book you will need some knowledge of computers and how they work. The book is not aimed at people who have never used a computer interested in what hackers get up to.

I found it a good book for computer users who are not quite veterans of the security on their PC. I found I had quite a few security holes in my PC from reading this book one of which was I was sharing all my drives which I thought was only on my network but was accessible to anyone on the internet.

The book comes with a CD full of viruses and trojans to try out on your own PC network which gives you a good idea of how "script-kiddies" can ruin your system. It covers UNIX and Windows based systems and thier security problems and gives the reader a good insight of how some hackers can "break in" to your system.

This is also a good book for people who are interested in hacking and how to do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 14 Feb 2004
I rate this book as excellent as it does exactly as it promises in its description.
A useful tool for learning computer vulnerabilities and how to detect & remove them.
The writing style is informal and friendly.
Not a book for computer novices, but you would not need a degree in Computer Science either to gain from reading it.
Superb.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not really..., 9 Jun 2004
This book didn't really do it for me. Meinel's so called methods of attack rely on a long string of unlikely coincidences, and at one point she even admits "I promise that you will learn enough ... to go toe to toe with hacker gangs and beat the tar out of them ... my nose is growing, that was a fib". What!?

Certainly her website's description of the book as "advanced hacker studies" is at least over ambitious.

Her writing style, whilst for the most part entertaining, is at times patronising of the reader; I found this to be quite annoying.

Overall, I felt this book contains too many broken promises and is of little informative value. As an alternative, I would recommend any books from the Hacking Exposed series. After buying ISBN 0072227427 soon after this it soon became obvious to me that it is much better.
