5.0 out of 5 stars Old, but with the right type of intuitions., 31 May 2003
By A Customer
Reading some of the other reviews, one could get the impression that the big weakness of the book is its lack of Internet-updated information and its failure to reveal unknown technical wisdom. However, this critique ignores the point of any hacking book.
Obviously, this book won't include specific instructions on how to exactly circumvent the newest firewall. Apart from the fact that it is from the early 90s, any such revelation would be fixed by a patch from the relevant software company - right away.
Instead, the book offers insight into the best thought-patterns and principles that are to be employed by someone who wants to "hack". It also offers some guidelines on action beyond the technical and human-engineering sphere (such as legal and ethical advice). It tries to be tangetial to the technical sphere only where this does not compromise technique (see their common password list and the few scripting examples).

Of course, you could have got there by pure common sense and by investing a while of thought. But who of you did actually sit down and organised their thoughts on such matters in a clear, structured and memorable way?
Books are not only there to spread thoughts that are exclusive to few of us, but also to clarify and organise thoughts that are available to even those common PC users. And this one does a good job at exactly that!

4.0 out of 5 stars not nearly as bad as they say...., 21 Jun 1999
By A Customer
true, it's a little outdated, but a good overview of early metheods. If you know a thing or two about a thing or two....steer clear of this queer! ... but by the way, if you are a real "Hacker", that is, if your not retarded, most of these metheods can still be used. Use at your own risk!

2.0 out of 5 stars A nostalgia trip if nothing else., 28 May 1999
By A Customer
I didn't buy this book expecting to be informed. Generally, if I see a book on hacking in the mall, I mark it as lame. However, I figured it would be a good laugh, so I bought it. What I got was a return to my childhood. Back when the XT and the Apple II were high tech. Back then, these methods actually worked. Alas, if you don't live in a rural area that has yet to see indoor plumbing, this book won't be much help. In fact, all of it is pretty much common sense and *WAY* outdated. If you use the stuff in this book, expect to get caught. Old timers like me will dig this book for the memories alone. Newbies, on the other hand should steer very clear. If you're reading this, then you are probably online. Save some money and look up everything you can on computer security. You'll learn more about modern hacking online and you won't have to waste money on something soooooo outdated.
