Excellent description of authors first visit to London, 9 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Ms Hanff's most popular work, 84, Charing Cross Road, dealt with the correspondence between herself and a very obliging bookshop in London immediately after the second world war. Following the friendships made through this correspondence, and with the success of 84, Charing Cross Road, she finally manages to cross the Atlantic to visit London for a summer. The bok details well, in diary form, the sights sounds and encounters with the enigmatic English, together with an appreciation of the authors expectations and emotions. As one would expect, this book is beautifully written with excellent descriptions of London and the forays into the countryside, together with her encounters with a number of interesting people, not least a friendship with Joyce Grenfell. This is a thoroughly good book, and will be enjoyed by anyone who read and loved 84 Charing Cross Road.

Helene Finally Gets Her Wish, 21 Sep 2008
The irrepressible Helene Hanff finally gets to visit London after the publication of 84 Charing Cross Road. This is the diary of her stay in this richly historic and sublimely cultured City. She is suitably amazed by London and the English countryside, and understandably confused as to why lifelong Londoners don't appreciate the beauty by which she is surrounded.
Helene's love affair with London and specifically, with Russell Square, is breathtaking in its specificity. She meets some fantastic people. It would be difficult to forget, if I had any desire to do so, the lovely interactions with Pat Buckley, Joyce Grenfell, and The Colonel.
I'm luckier than most. I don't have to pack a bag to visit Helene's London - I live here. I'm off to visit Russell Square in order to view it through her eyes.

Sheer, unadulterated delight (Part II), 26 Sep 2009
It is impossible to review The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street without spoiling the entire 84 Charing Cross Road experience, so I won't bother. If you've already read and loved 84, you don't need my recommendation to decide to pick up this. If you haven't read 84, do yourself a favour: do so, and read Duchess straight after. I cannot begin to describe how grateful you'll be to have lived for a while within their pages.
