1.0 out of 5 stars Others have done it better, 9 Nov 2003

This book is essentially just a rehash of concepts to be found in books such as Overcoming Overeating, and When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies (both by Jane Hirschman and Carol Munter). LeBlanc doesn't have anything new to say, and I found the book somewhat disorganised and difficult to follow. If you're interested in this subject, there are much, much better books to be found, particularly the ones mentioned above by Hirschman and Munter. Don't go for the bandwagon imitation, go for the original and best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Guilt-Free Guide to Understanding Why We Eat & How to Stop, 2 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I like this book because the author recognizes there are many different mind-sets that lead to overeating...and she's been there! For all of these she prescribes a variety of emotional remedies to suit every personality type in a simple, straight-forward style. She talks very knowingly about the sense of lack and hopelessness that one must be ripe to address before a healthy body weight can become a permanent way of life. As a psychotherapist and weight loss program innovator she has collected many anecdotes which should provide great inspiration to anyone ready to feel deserving of a healthier future for their bodies. (She also helps us deal with the fear of being attractive again!)

1.0 out of 5 stars Not particularly helpful, 21 May 2004

(REAL NAME)
As a diet and fitness instructor with a tendency to overeat, I'm always interested in the variety of ideas and theories that different self-help books come up with. However, this one was rather disappointing, with little to offer me or my clients.

The theories are vague and flimsy. At times, there is a hint of inspiration but the book fails to deliver: for example, the idea that fatigue contributes to compulsive eating is put forward, but not really explored. The author suggests addressing it by drinking juice instead of eating sweets, but many juices will release sugars relatively quickly: there are far better alternatives to keep you going while avoiding feeling sluggish.

There's a lot of description of how you might feel as an overeater, but limited ideas on how to tackle it.

The text is littered with case notes - most just underline how fed up and miserable many overeaters are, which isn't news to me, and there is too little information with the success stories to gain any real ideas.

There's precious little evidence that the author has the range of expertise necessary to deal with the topic effectively. Unless there's a chance that doing yoga in front of a mirror and repeating fluffy affirmations of how much you love your body might help you stay off the biscuits, give this one a miss.
