3.0 out of 5 stars Needs to be thoughroughly updated, 30 Sep 2002
By Rob (Goolwa, South Australia) - See all my reviews
As interesting and informative this guide to Australia and the Australians is, it's really let down by the fact that it was written in the early 1990s (1991 I guess), and despite the numerous revisions listed in the front of the book, there's far too much dated material left over.

This book is in desperate need of rewriting. The constant references to "recent" events in the 80s and early 90s confuses and misinforms the reader, e.g. there's talk of a "recent" recession but it's not clear if this is text from the original draft around 1991 or a reference to the world economic slowdown of 1999-2002. The book also talks of current high Oz interest rates, when in fact, as of today (mid 2002), Oz interest rates are at their lowest in a long long time.

I can only recommend this book if you are desperate to read more about the Oz way of life. In between the references to history from the perspective of current events, there are plenty of useful insights and analysis of Australian people, lifestyles and culture. It's just a shame we have to read about the "recent" exploits of Pat Cash at Wimbledon for example.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 12 Aug 2004
By A Customer
I bought this book a year or so ago after reading the exeellent and informative Culture Shock Singapore guide (our plans changed!). I found it quite dissappointing in that I dont think the author really likes being in Australia; maybe Im wrong on that point. I also found it too centered on Perth which is fine if you want to relocate there and not if you dont.

I found it quite out-of-date and in desparate need for an update or, preferably, a complete re-write.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not much use for a UK reader, 20 May 2008
Despite being published in the UK, this is heavily biased towards the cultural differences that would be experienced by someone moving from Asia to Australia. The author spent her childhood in the UK but had then lived for many years in Singapore before moving to Perth. A lot of the examples that she gives of things that will apparently come as a 'culture shock' are actually the same as in the UK. The book is also focused too much on Perth and Western Australia, at the expense of the big cities in the east.

Ultimately, it provides some interesting insights but it is very much based around one woman's experiences of moving from Singapore to Perth, and isn't much help to a UK reader planning on moving to Melbourne or Sydney.
