"Hungary. A mania with a population of ten million. It is now generally regarded as curable, though this would take away much of its charm" - Istvan Orkeny (quotation from the book)

As a Hungarian I have bought this book for my English boyfriend as a manual to me. Apparently one of the subtitles "Why live life like a drama when you can live it like a tragedy?" explains it all. :)
It has proven to be so successful that I have now given copies of this book to other members of his family and his friends.

This book manages to be funny and true at the same time and offers an insight into the Hungarian soul and way of thinking. It explains traditions, (mis)beliefs and their origins and is liberally sprinkled with examples of Hungarian poems and common proverbs.

It is a guidebook to the psyche of a nation, so if you are after only a book with street maps or museum opening times, it is not the book for you. Though I guess it would give you plenty of ideas what sort of things to visit and where and what to eat and drink in Hungary

I warmly recommend it to anyone with a Hungarian connection and to all of you who are yet to discover the fascinating culture of this nation.
