Product Description
Book Description
Web services are leading to the use of more packaged software either as an internal service or an external service available over the Internet. These services, which will be connected together to create the information technology systems of the future, will require less custom software in our organizations and more creativity in the connections between the services. This book begins with a high-level example of how an average person in an organization might interact with a service-oriented architecture. As the book progresses, more technical detail is added in a "peeling of the onion" approach. The leadership opportunities within these developing service-oriented architectures are also explained. At the end of the book there is a compendium or "pocket library" for software technology related to service-oriented architectures.

Synopsis
Web services are leading to the use of more packaged software either as an internal service or an external service available over the Internet. These services, which will be connected together to create the information technology systems of the future, will require less custom software in our organizations and more creativity in the connections between the services. This book begins with a high-level example of how an average person in an organization might interact with a service-oriented architecture. As the book progresses, more technical detail is added in a "peeling of the onion" approach. The leadership opportunities within these developing service-oriented architectures are also explained. At the end of the book there is a compendium or "pocket library" for software technology related to service-oriented architectures. This is the only web services book to cover both data management and software engineering perspectives, excellent resource for all members of IT teams. It is jargon free, highly illustrated, with introduction that anyone can read that then leads into increasing technical detail.

It also provides a set of leadership principles and suggested application for using this technology.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to web services, 18 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Excellent introduction to web services and associated architectures. The author writes very clearly and the book is extremely easy to read (until you get to the reference sections at the back...) The author incorporates his experience in a very practical way (e.g. going through the 5 steps to full adoption of web services, along with staffing and likely issues). Suggested architectures are also interesting and useful, as is the section on people-centric change issues encountered in a large technology project (and how they can be addressed). All the diagrams are extremely clear (no mean feat!) and the associated website is also very worthwhile.

However, the book sometimes feels slightly prescriptive, with possibly not enough weight given to the integration of packaged solutions. Also, the welter of terms and standards bodies could be sifted objectively: which ones carry most weight? Is Oasis really the decisive standards-setting body the author implies?

On the whole, very manageable and, as an informed introduction for technically-literate managers, well worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview, 8 Jul 2003
By Machinetta (Budapest) - See all my reviews
This book has proved surprisingly impressive, covering all aspects of this hot topic from the outside (i.e. starting by showing what web services are and how they interact) in (i.e. moving to focus on the underlying technology).

Not amazingly technical, this is probably more for business leaders and analysts, who need to understand how SOAs work rather than actually putting them together themselves. However, it is bang up to date, extremely readable, clear and concise, and provides a good framework.

It is also very strong on the change management side of things, refreshingly devoting substantial time to considerations of the effect on end users of introducing these technological changes.
