Product Description

Review
"I am pleased to report that this great book has gotten better. ...if you want to understand how networks work, not just how the packet headers are formatted, this is the book to read." from the foreword by David Clark, Massachusetts Institute of Technology "Peterson and Davie have brilliantly distilled the vast body of seemingly ad hoc knowledge that underlies the Internet architecture into a cohesive and easy-to-understand textbook. The topics are keenly relevant and are covered not just by describing how things work, but more importantly, by providing the rationale for why things were designed as they were. An excellent choice for an introductory course in computer networks that also serves as a valuable reference for the networking professional." -Steve McCanne, FastForward Networks "This book is the best resource available to appreciate the numerous and detailed design issues underlying modern networks like the Internet. It is thorough yet concise, and many subtle and difficult issues are explained well. The second edition continues this tradition by adding and expanding on issues of intense recent interest, such as wireless access, multimedia, quality-of-service, and security." -David G. Messerschmitt, University of California, Berkeley "...into a book that one can actually lift, Peterson and Davie have crammed a remarkable breadth and depth of detail, written with a clarity often missing from the primary source material." -Jeffrey C. Mogul, Compaq Western Research Laboratory --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
This third edition represents another major upgrade...But it has not lost track of its larger goal, to tell you not only the facts but the why behind the facts...What this book will teach you in today's networked world will give the insight needed to work in tomorrow's landscape.
-From the Foreword by David Clark, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

In this new edition of their classic and bestselling textbook, authors Larry Peterson and Bruce Davie continue to emphasize why networks work the way they do. Their "system approach" treats the network as a system composed of interrelated building blocks (as opposed to strict layers), giving students and professionals the best possible conceptual foundation on which to understand current networking technologies, as well as the new ones that will quickly take their place.

Incorporating instructor and user feedback, this edition has also been fully updated and includes all-new material on MPLS and switching, wireless and mobile technology, peer-to-peer networks, Ipv6, overlay and content distribution networks, and more. As in the past, all instruction is rigorously framed by problem statements and supported by specific protocol references, C-code examples, and thought-provoking end-of-chapter exercises.

New to the edition is a downloadable network stimulation lab manual that allows students to visualize and experiment with core networking technologies in direct coordination with the book's discussion. Thanks to this and many other enhancements, Computer Networks: A Systems Approach remains an essential resource for a successful classroom experience and a rewarding career in networking.

Third Edition Features:

--Written by an author team with over thirty years of first-hand experience in networking research, development, and teaching--two leaders in the work of defining and implementing many of the protocols discussed in the book.

--Includes all-new coverage and updated material on MPLS and switching, wireless and mobile technology, peer-to-peer networks, Ipv6, overlay and content distribution networks, VPNs, IP-Telephony, network security, and multimedia communications (SIP, SDP).

--Additional and earlier focus on applications in this edition makes core protocols more accessible and more meaningful to readers already familiar with networked applications.

--Features chapter-framing statements, over 400 end-of-chapter exercises, example exercises(with solutions), shaded sidebars covering advanced topics, web resources and other proven pedagogical features.

--Through a companion Web site (see button on this website), provides many additional resources, including a downloadable network simulation lab manual tightly integrated with the topics in the book.

* Describes the principles and practical implementation of computer networks as distilled by two authors with over thirty years of experience in networking research, development, and teaching.
* Includes all-new coverage and updated material on MPLS and switching, wireless and mobile technology, peer-to-peer networks, Ipv6, overlay and content distribution networks, VPNs, IP-Telephony, network security, and multimedia communications (SIP, SDP).
* Companion "Network Simulation Experiments Manual" available with purchase of book (or can be purchased separately). The manual contains network simulation experiments that are tied closely with the contents of the book and a special academic version of the award-winning OPNET simulation software is available for download. 5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, 14 Dec 1998
By A Customer
For a reader with a background in programming and/or computer science, this book is a great introduction to all major aspects of computer networking. The writing is easy to understand -- it seems the author is more interested in really communicating the ideas than in dazzling the reader with unnecessarily complicated language. The book is long on the underlying principles of networking, but also maintains a certain level of practicality that I really appreciated. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars How about 6 stars, 28 Jul 1999
By A Customer
Excellent organization! Excellent choice of topics! Excellent approach to presentation and teaching!

Very timely as far as material covered. It covers issues that are just starting to be covered in the computer industry weekly magazines.

Bypasses basics we are all familiar with and goes right for the good stuff network admins and designers want to know more about, like switch design, congestion control, and high-speed networking.

The writing is more advanced than most of the rag books out there, but non-computer science majors will easily follow along and appreciate the ease with which excursions into advanced topics are handled.

Another plus is the physical layout and design. It is printed on quality paper with nice type. Very appealing.

With all this raving, you might think I work for the publisher. Actually, I write for another publisher. I first browsed this book in a bookstore and immediately knew it was a winner. I will be referring my readers to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 24 Aug 2006
Are you looking for a complete list of tcp states, a complete description of all the TLA's (3 letters acronyms), all the port numbers assigned by standard services? If so, don't buy this book!

You should buy this book if you want to now why (and also how) networks work, you shouldn't buy if you only want to know the names of the fileds of an IP header packet.

The perfect choice for the "scienzist", for the high level professional and for the passionate
