4.0 out of 5 stars Med in heaven ! , 3 Nov 2007

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This is a great cookbook witha wealth of mediterranean recipes. Its such a relief to find a vegan cookbook that differs from the norm, and even harder to find a decent mediterranean one. However this book is excellent , crammed full of recipes for vegans, people who cant eat dairy and meat eaters would love the recipes too.It is well written in a way that would appeal to anyone, regardless if they were vegan or not.It is one of the few books I enjoy reading the introduction too.
The recipes come from Greece, Spain,Italy Morroco and France and there is loads of them.It is divided into starters ( meze, tapas, antispati etc ),soups & stews, salads, breads, pasta & rice, vegetables ,deserts and meals in minutes. There are some very different recipes and it really expanded my repitore of the plain old veg.It also contains cooks tips throughout and some information on the origins of the recipes- which was both handy & intereasting.
The other thing I loved about this book is it doesnt use dairy substitues like tofu, soya etc instead relying on natural spices & ingredients .All the recipes fat, protein details but there are no photos in the book- which may be a downside for some. There are also no time indicators at the top of the recipes showing how long each recipe will take .
Although some of the recipes may take longer to cook ( the squash gnocchi takes about 90 mins ! )there are also quick, easy recipes if you are short of time in a seperate section.
I really love this book , its gota universal appeal, huge variety of recipes and easy pratical style .Overall it makes my mouth water just looking at it, definately one of the best recipe books I have .

5.0 out of 5 stars A picture without photos!, 15 May 2008
I debated carefully about ordering this book because I am a complete sucker for photographs, but having just taken delivery of it I am delighted to find that the author has preceded each recipe with her own illustrative introduction which in some cases almost provide you with a taste of the dish! For example on the recipe for "Chickpeas with Parsley-Tahini Sauce" she notes:

"... This addictive appetizer - rather like an un-mashed hummus - is terrific with pita bread, crackers, or served in butter lettuce or radicchio leaves. Ready in just about five minutes using canned chickpeas, you simply can't beat its convenience when unexpected guests drop by. ...."

She has been fastidious in her attention to detail, providing cooks tips where possible, ideas for advance preparation and nutrional information. It is the only book I have come across that gives detailed advice on soaking and cooking chickpeas.

There is a warmth that comes from this book and I know that inspite of there being no photographs, this is going to become one of my favourite recipe books. I guess that in this case a few words are worth a thousand pictures!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, 30 Jan 2008
This is a great cookbook for those that live in areas without easy access to vegan substitutes, or who rely on them a bit too much. All of the ingredients used are pretty easy to find, and the recipes rely on fresh fruit and veg. It's given me a wealth of ideas for meals to make during the summers I spend in Greece. I also like the suggested menus and the nutritional content included for each recipe`. I even don't mind the lack of pictures, although that's usually a downside for me. I would have given another star if it had included more Greek recipes. If you like Mediterranean cooking, I definitely recommend this book.
