5.0 out of 5 stars A must for every serious enthusiast, 3 Jun 2001
This is the best book for the beginner. From what equipment to buy to how to make the best welds, all the tips and methods are explained in this very well illustrated book. By buying this book prior to make any weld you will avoid a lot of mistakes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Welders Handbook, 21 Jan 2004
A useful book covering all aspects of welding, including; oxy/gas welding and cutting, brazing and soldering, metal-arc, MIG, TIG, preparation, equipment and safety.

This is just what I like to see in this type of book, clear, to the point and comprehensive.

If you are a novice or have some experience at one or two types of welding and want to broaden you skills then this book is ideal and should certainly provide you with enough information and guidance to get well on the way.

All of the key skills are explained from the ground up, as well as the physical principals behind them.

Not a fully fledged technical manual for the professional but an excellent general reference.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing lack of detail for a book so well-recommended, 12 Sep 2003
By Eamonn McGonigle - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Everywhere I went looking for recommendations for a good book about welding, this was cited as the one to get. So I did. I am an amateur who found himself with a low-end stick welder and a low-end MIG welder (an embarrasment of riches !) and wanted to learn to use both "properly". I was dismayed to find that these two methodologies were dispensed with in only 20 pages between them. There was far too little practical guidance about correct technique, common problems and their solutions and how to tell a "good" weld from a "bad" weld. Also, the pictures are all black-and-white and aren't taken close-up enough to illustrate any particular point well. Besides that, most of the pictures don't seem to be there to be instructive...they are mostly pretty pictures of welding equipment or of things the author has built. They really don't contribute anything to the reader's knowledge.

The book isn't all bad...what content it contains is pretty good. The author is very clearly an expert and he does write well. If there was more detail, better pictures and fewer interesting but irrelevant anecdotes (with accompanying pictures !) from the author about his times welding racing cars, aircraft seats, trailers etc. etc. it could have been the really great book I was expecting it to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most definitively "a complete guide"
This book deserves its subtitle. It discusses the 10 most common welding processes and is riddled with practical tips. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of welding, but I have some concerns.
Overall, the book was very informative and comprehensive on melting points and welding methods. I *do* have a problem with 2 points in the book. Read more
