This is an interesting book which is a development of the author's doctoral dissertation. Jones should be commended for producing this work, as it draws a lot of information together which, I can attest, you would have to scour many other books for. As a guide for further learning about the activities of the United States Navy's battleships in the First World War, this book serves very well. It has to. Because unfortunately the author has made far too many simple errors in reading through the largely secondary source material. The reader then has to refer to the cited material to make sure that Jones got it right, which invariably he hasn't. Some of the errors include totally misreading orders, misreading material from other books, misspelling names of authors, relying far too much on autobiographies, and quite simply not relying on a broad enough spectrum of source material. I have to be honest, I don't think that Jones "then" would have been able to have dealt with it properly.

If this book had been done properly and was unimpeachably accurate then it would be invaluable. But it is not. Even as a beginner's guide to the U.S. battleships' war I can't recommend it as it contains far too many errors. I'm lucky enough to have the knowledge and the library to instantly spot these errors. Others won't be so lucky, and can't be until these sorts of books are given a proper proof-reading by someone who knows what they're talking about.
