5.0 out of 5 stars A user friendly companion for visitors to these 4 islands, 25 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Dominica, St. Lucia, Martinique & Basse-Terre (the western half of Guadeloupe) are all part of the volcanic chain in the Eastern Caribbean & hence mountainous & cloaked in forest & lush vegetation.
Guadeloupe & Martinique are Departments of France, so beautifully combining the French culture with the warm seas & climate of the tropics. Dominica & St. Lucia are both ex British Colonies, independent since the late 70's & democratically governed on the Westminster model. A melting pot of races from their tubulant past - English, French, Spanish, African & Carib, interspersed with settlers attracted to the region from more remote parts of the globe - skin tone covers the whole spectrum, so colour & race are simply not an issue. Most holiday makers are attracted to the Caribbean by the sunshine & wonderful beaches. Flat islands such as Antigua & Barbados have little else to offer scenically & are very hot & arid. By comparison these islands, Dominica in particular, are kept cool by their high mountains & the rivers which flow from them.
Much of the high forested areas are protected in national parks & forest reserves. So too are areas off the sheltered west coastline protected in marine parks & reserves - diving opportunities here are exceptional.
Few, if any, other guides are available which focus on this region. It is written as a companion for the visitor & covers many aspects - climate, history, culture, flaura & fauna, getting there, where to stay & eat, entry requirements etc. etc.. Packed with useful information, it is well written & easy to navigate. A definate 'must' for the discerning visitor...
