What a wonderful find!
The sub-title of this book is Returning to Natural Movement and that is certainly what reading it and following some of the exercises in it allowed me to do. The Magic Roller exercises in particular created a whole new sensation in my neck and back, even though I have no serious problems there.

Ruthy Alon is writing about the Feldenkrais Method - a method devised by an Israeli, Moshe Feldenkrais, to improve his own functioning and well-being and taught to others in Israel in the late sixties. 'The Feldenkrais Method, rather than giving fixed solutions to our problems, invites us to explore ourselves in a deep way, to discover within ourselves possibilities of which we never dreamed, possibilities that can lead us to a new and better life.'

In Mindful Spontaneity Ruthy is writing particularly about the one aspect of backache, something which affects most of us at some time in our lives. As you start to read you immediately realise that this is about you, not about everyone in general. You are encouraged in the gentlest of manners, and almost in a voice which you can hear, to listen to your own body, to feel for the smallest details. Everything is to be done within your own 'comfort zone'. There are no set targets, no 'oughts' or 'shoulds'. Most of the exercises are done lying down and consist of tiny movements after which you are encouraged to walk around slowly, listening and feeling for the smallest changes. And changes there certainly were for me, some small and some enormous.

The book is a mixture of theory, experience and explanation written in a poetic language which makes compelling reading and an ideal source to return to time after time when the stresses and strains of modern living try to reassert themselves on our bodies.
