Product Description

Review

"What Peter Ralston does remarkably well is to clarify what the classics have been trying to tell us, and to offer concrete direction on how to continue growing and become better in the internal arts. You can't fix Cheng Hsin on the wall with a pin, because, as you try, you realize that Cheng Hsin is the wall, and the pin, and the action, and the intent."
-Frank LaManna, "T'ai Chin Journal"

Product Description

This guide provides T'ai Chi students and practitioners with a methodical and philosophical grounding in the martial art of Cheng Hsin T'ui Shou, which is rooted in three traditional arts: T'ai Chi, Alido and Pa Kua Ch'ang.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware false prophets, 27 Nov 2006
By Tim "Bookworm" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book was given to me by a friend who had mistakenly purchased it while searching for information on T'ui Shou. The author evidently considers himself a prophet of internal understanding. He succeeds in conveying a minimum of understanding in a maximum of words, and his convoluted style of writing is both self-gratifying and bereft of any meaningful knowledge. Beware false prophets! The author has a shallow knowledge of a range of techniques from a variety of Arts. A Jack of all trades and a master of none, his descriptions of techniques are mechanical and pitiful. It is apparent that he has no understanding of the internal aspects of Martial Arts, despite the insinuation of the subtitle. I certainly wouldn't be wasting time on this review were it not for the thought that this individual has placed himself as the founder of a new Art, and as an expert martial artist. A scary thought. This book is beautiful to look at, and it burns well on a bonfire ... so I have found.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most accomplished martial artist I have met., 24 Jun 2007
By M. Hart (Wales UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having studied with Peter for an number of years the book is an absolutely invaluable resource. The main reason for this being that the desciptions of the t'ui techniques that I need for exams have such a great clarity about them.

At the beginning of the book Peter mentions somewhere that Cheng Hsin T'ui Shou is also known as the "outreaching hand" (for t'ai chi people this is the ting jing or listening energy). The reason is clear - without outreaching there is no art.
