1.0 out of 5 stars The title is misleading, it is not DirectX8, but DirectX (1), 12 April 2001
I have just returned my copy!!, I started flicking through in excitment thinking this book might just help me with my current project when i noticed LPDIRECTDRAW, what, that is DirectX1, not 8, The author has titled this book in a very misleading way as it does not cover DirectX 8 at all, it simply includeds the DirectX8 SDK on the CD, which is a free download by the way.

Sorry, but a poor excuse for a re-release of a book, with minor changes (at the authors own admission)

Paul,

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what it says on the cover, 30 April 2001
By A Customer
I bought this book in the hope that it would cover the changes in DirectX 8.

Its title is very misleading, in that the book doesn't cover DirectX 8 at all. It just uses the generic DirectX interfaces. I guess the key word was Introduction WITH DirectX 8, rather than using...

The code examples are very basic, and there is not a lot of code around DirectX itself - it concentrates more on building sprites and reading bitmaps, etc.

If you want a book that describes DirectX 8.0 - don't buy this book! Unfortunately, I don't think there are any books out there that actually use DirectX 8.0 yet.

If you want an introduction into DirectX - don't buy it either, there are many other books out there which are a lot better (i would recommend 'Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus' - it does use an early version of DirectX, but is a great place to start).

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor book that doesnt deliver what the title says it does..., 19 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This book I have to say is nothing short of poor. It does introduce you to DirectX...but only as far as veesion 7. DX8 is not taught or used in this book and the author clearly is cashing in on the DX's COM model (backward compatibility).

If I could give negative starage I would!

My advice...dont bother...learn DX8 from example source and the SDK docs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for learning game programming.
I bought this book having had no game programming experience at all. It was great in teaching me how to set-up DirectX, explaning the game loop, and writing simple 2D games. Read more
