This is an extremely readable book, with useful information on artificial intelligence and radiosity. It contains a good introduction to BSPs among other things, which would particularly appeal to the intermediate game programmer. Whilst by no means containing an extensive treatment of certain topics, the book is extremely good at making the reader think for himself, which is a vital skill in game development. The book is an excellent complement to other more detailed books such as 3D Games - Real-time Rendering and Software Technology and Graphics Programming Black Book (Special Ed.), which are more advanced.

When the word advanced appears in the title you would assume that the book is written in a professional manner to support the difficult subject being covered. This isn't the case with this book.

It reads like an online tutorial, with slang used. Certainly not written in an academic style, the author doesn't appear to have a complete grasp of what he's trying to teach you. As a result the attitude 'not sure how, I just know it does work' comes accross and doesn't reassure the reader through this complex topic.

On the plus side, you get an insight into Direct 3D. The book covers the maths involved and skims over subjects such as lighting.

You come out of reading this book, not completely understanding the subject, but are given a base on which to build. It will take a second readnig to get everything covered, though further reading will be needed.

I recommend this book to people that are happy with DirectX's 2d libraries, others should buy on the understanding that this won't teach those without A-Level maths under their belts. A complex subject taught in an average way.

You copuld learn a lot, but not indepth enough.

This books main good factor is a nice little section on 3D game maths. Beyond that, too much time is spent on functions and sturcture that are used without being properly understood. Which is fine, unless you want to unravel the clumsy wrapper API the author builds around DX and write some reasonable optimized game code. If you want in introduction- try the for dummies. If you want a reference- get the SDKs and API reference manuals.
