Product Description

Product Description
Book and CD-ROM. This book is divided into five sections, each focusing on a particular aspect of COM and ATL development. The book begins with a review of object-oriented and interface-based programming techniques, then moves into the core aspects of COM, including a full examination of language independence and location transparency. The author illustrates the numerous CASE tools used during ATL development and discusses apartments, COM exceptions, object identity, and component housing, in addition to various advanced concepts such as COM categories and tear-off interfaces. The fourth section examines a number of 'COM patterns' such as enumerators, collections, scriptable objects, and callback interfaces. The book closes with an investigation of using ATL as a windowing framework and ends with the development of a full-blown animated ActiveX control using ATL. The companion CD contains full source code for all the labs, along with the official COM and DCOM white papers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just like ATL Internals...with labs!, 29 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This book really hit home for me. Lots of books out there talk about which tools to access when using ATL (AppWizard) but dont say much about what all that generated code means. This book does. Unlike ATL Internals (which is also an awesome book) this one has a ton of 'lab asigments' which let you try everything for yourself step by step. Perfect. I did find some typos, but they were minor (mCar instead of m_Car). Get this book if you want to see how COM and ATL play off each other and NEED to do it yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB...Simply a must have of must haves !!, 19 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Brilliant book!
Clear, concise and thorough. Goes from chapter to chapter building on the knowledge gained.
Started from chapter 1 and by the time I got to chapter 8 ( in a couple of weeks ) I knew enough to build COM/ATL components from scratch.
Always by my monitor.
All you need to program COM and ATL !

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbly written, masterful piece of work, 4 April 2006
By G. M. Douglas (Bristol) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
According to the book Andrew Troelsen works for a training
company and this fact shines through in the clarity of his
writing style: he has had to stand up and explain this stuff;
find good examples, answer questions and explain things
'on the fly'.

I simply cannot find enough praise for this book. Consider my
rating to be 6 stars.

I'm not going to dissect it here because I've only finished the
first 4 chapters. That was enough to make me want to write this
review.

I found myself saying '... now I get it'. The examples are well
crafted and carefuly constructed to link together where topics or
concepts are being developed.

One suggestion is that you *will* benefit by typing the code
rather than just using the CD. Sure, this is a bit tedious
but you can refer to the CD if something doesn't work.

I have bought many programming books over the years, but this one
stands head and shoulders above most of them. Others have said
that this book defines how programming books should be written.
I can only agree.

One piece of advice: Buy it.
