5.0 out of 5 stars One of those great books, read by far too few., 29 April 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Warbirds (Paperback)
This book IS the best flying novel I have ever read and read ... (Rolling Thunder, Day of the Cheetah et al)
The story centres on "Big Ugly" the F4 Phantom and the squadron that fly it (The 45th Tactical Fighter Wing). You don't have to be a fan of the F4 but it doesn't hurt, that said read on. All of the components from politics, intelligence, operational day to day narrative and just enough of the personalities blend effectively to support the main raison d'etre ...the flying action. Starting with a F4 Phantom / Mig 23 contact over Libya. It pulls together three threads and characters that are to run right through the book, "Muddy Waters", "Jack Loocke" and "Gen Cunningham". Action is almost immediate and never far away. While not too technically excessive in its detail, it is more than sufficient to paint a full picture. Dealing with the F4 as a falling star of the military in the period in which the book is set gives added breadth to the story. Indeed considering the time of writing and the scenario laid out, with hindsight, it is extremely close to recent history. Once the initial canvas is drawn, the book accelerates into the first phase, the forging of a squadron into a fighting unit. All the time the reader is kept informed of the global picture. Realistic development of the characters and the story then continues. All the time the F4 and flying are the focus of attention. Moved to the UK to work up ready for a deployment to the Middle East more supporting characters are brought in. You can imagine them existing in reality, "Bull Morgan" "Thunder" Bryant and others. For the techies the addition of the "Wild Weasels" is another added layer of realism. As I read the book, I started to identify with the squadron completely. Once thrown into the limited war scenario, the politics and peripheral story line gel very well. Just as you are pulling the G's with them and feeling they are about to fail the story goes into re-heat with a nice political twist. Enter the F15 Eagles, but the book is all F4 , here the realistic portrayal of "Big Ugly" enhances the story even more. The intensity of the flying narrative develops to a fever pitch right through the final chapters, this is the book at its best. The conclusion is as realistic and as well written as the chapters proceeding it. I hope having read this you can get hold of a copy!
To sum up, if this were made into a film it would out gun that F14 tail in every department :-} .

5.0 out of 5 stars The first and best, 20 April 2006

(REAL NAME)
This is the first and the best book in what can only be described as a fantastic series. Very good characters who you soon start to feel you know personally and a fast pace that keeps you engrosed and looking forward to reading the next page. The Air combat is written in a way that could only be done by someone who actually knows what it is like to turn and burn in a fast jet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Dale Brown, 6 July 2002
By A Customer
I bought this book back when it was first published. The best recommendation I can make is that I have bought all of Richard Herman's books since then and have just pre-ordered his next in hardback. Herman has a great talent for creating an ensemble cast that you really like. It is a good job he creates so many great characters since no character in his books is safe in the battles he writes about. In recent years Herman has moved to more geo-political books but this was his first and is pure techno-thriller. Buy it and enjoy!
