5.0 out of 5 stars An educational look at life on the other side, 15 May 2008

Despite increasing levels of tolerance within society, I can't help but suspect that the majority of parents would be less than thrilled at the idea of their youngsters receiving social education from this book. However, I saw no cause to raise a moral eyebrow when young Crispin received his Christmas gift from Uncle Bruce. While I trust that my son will go on to make sensible lifestyle choices, it would hardly be fair if I were to influence his future decisions (during these formative years) by witholding the manifesto for the opposition.

Anyhow, this is a charming story of young Gloria's visit to the Brighton Pride festival, along with her two mothers. Far from being the unadulterated parade of vice and debauchery that some people choose to treat it as (not least my Uncle Bruce!), it is rather a clean and civilised affair that is perfectly suited to a family outing. In fact, as Gloria discovers, the experience is akin to visiting a great big friendly circus (featuring multiple 'ringmasters' with whips and an abundance of bearded ladies). Unfortunately, Gloria's mothers decide that she is still a little young to see the sword-swallowing show, but the day ends in pleasant circumstances. As they depart, a clown plastered in a layer of garish make-up gives Gloria a helium-filled inflatable tied to a length of ribbon. She may be too innocent to appreciate the safety message that this unusual 'balloon' helps to convey, but that doesn't stop it from making the ideal conclusion to an enjoyable day out.
