4.0 out of 5 stars Best Book so far on SharePoint Portal Server, 4 April 2002
By P. J. Coventry (Leicestershire UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've read a few SharePoint Portal books now and sieved through the information on the web. This is definitely the best book on SharePoint I have seen so far, and a must buy for anyone developing solutions based on SharePoint Portal Server 2001(SPPS). It still suffers from being written just as SPPS was released, but there are some great tips on how to customise the product. It is more a developers book, and personnally I would like to see more information on how to administrator, together with real-life implementation scenarios that go beyond the whitepapers and resource kit information...

4.0 out of 5 stars A book of two halves, 5 April 2002
If you have read all the MS blurb on SharePoint Portal Server, there is little that the first half of this book adds. However, this weakness is more than made up for by the second half, which looks at the technical nitty-gritty of the application, how it works and how it can be customised. Be aware though that it is tough going unless you are already familiar with MS XML, OWA and CDO in its various guises. This book is not suited to those looking for a Beginners guide or introduction to SharePoint.

Criticism 1: When the authors try to be light hearted or use humour to illustrate a point, it just doesn't come off - leave the funnies for Dummies books.

Criticism 2: Just because you are BUYING this book, it doesn't mean that you will not be exposed to Compaq 'chest-puffing' throughout.
