5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, 2 Dec 2002

What the Lady Wants is a charming little book full of wit and humour. The main characters are Mae Belle, the great neice to three powerful rich types (whoes trust fund is worthless) and Mitch, a stockbrocker who has taken a bet to see if he could make a PI agency solvent within one year, without using his contacts from being a stockbrocker. Mae comes to Mitch's office because she is looking for an incompetant PI. She tells him that her great-uncle has been murdered, and that the murderer made off with her uncle's current diary. So whoever murdered her uncle has the diary. Mae just wants the diary back, she doesn't believe that her uncle was murdered.

Instead of incompetant, she finds Mitch, who has been working divorce cases for the entire year, so he believes that everyone lies, and spots that Mae is not being entirely forthcoming in her story.

This book is essentaily one long, hilarious high-point. The relatives are larger than life, and the quagmires that develop around Mae and Mitch as they look for the diary seem to open up at their feet. With every interview, more is found out about Mae's departed Uncle, and none of it is good. There is the mistress, and the wife (that no-one knew about) Mae's ex husband, and her cousin Carlo who is a thug. All of these characters line up to confuse the issue.

A wonderful, hilarious book.

I read this when it came out a few years ago.
It's Jennifer Crusie at her best, basically a screwball comedy,
masquerading as a film noir.
Its light, frothy, & fun - and very definately a keeper

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and funny ..., 5 Jan 2005

Jennifer Cruise is a good writer and she does not disappoint in this funny book that parodies films of the 30s. Mae Belle could easily be a doppelganger of Jessica Rabbit. This book is funny, touching and romantic (if your idea of romance is being shot at and being broke) and Mitch's character is loveable. As for Carlos, he is just a huge giant teddy bear.
