4.0 out of 5 stars Romantic mystery, 9 Jan 2004
This is the first book I have read by this author and I intend to buy more. Olivia is asked by Stephen to investigate a clairvoyant who is receiving jewellery from his mother for contacting his dead brother. This takes Olivia to Stephen's country house and their attraction for each other grows. The love story is fairly simple, with misunderstandings, doubts and the problems of social expectations, but it is well written and I liked the characters and wanted them to get together. The story concentrates on the mystery and the characters and there is a nice twist at the end.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a mystery with a romantic slant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Things that go bump in the night, 24 Jan 2007

A good book. The romance between the two main characters is really secondary to the suspence story at the heart of the book.
Stephen, Lord St. Leger, has inherited the title off his elder brother who died the previous year. Stephen's mother is distraught over the death of her son and turns to mediums for help reaching him. Stephen is disturbed to learn that his mother is giving valuable jewellry to a "Russian" medium and hires Olivia Moreland, one of the "mad Morelands", to help him prove that the medium is a charlatan. However, once Stephen, Olivia, the medium and her entourage are esconced in Stephen's family seat, Blackhope Hall, weird things start to happen which can't be explained by blaming them on the medium's 'tricks'. The Hall was built on the site of a Norman castle and Stephen and Olivia begin to see ghosts of the castle's occupants and sense something else. It seems as if the medium's seances have called forth an evil spirit.
Olivia is a Duke's daughter and her family, the Morelands, are considered strange and eccentric by other members of the ton. The members of her family include a scientist, an historian, an explorer, an archiologist and a social reformer. They are well educated, academic and not particulary interested in the socializing and trivia that other ton members are. In a somewhat exotic family, Olivia considers herself as plain and homely. Until she meets Lord St. Leger.
