4.0 out of 5 stars Good and Readable, 12 Jul 2002
By Trevor Woodage (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Contrary to the earlier reviews, I rate this book pretty highly. Perhaps it does not cover all of the birding areas in Costa Rica (what book can?) but it is well laid out by region & describes in some detail several specific sites within each region. There are lists of the local bird specialities in each region & lists of the birds seen by the author & others (by season) at each site reviewed. Suggested accommodations are also listed near to all of the sites reviewed.

It is a very readable guide & I have found it invaluable in planning a second birding trip to Costa Rica. Especially useful are the directions to each site & the suggested time needed to travel there from San Jose or other large towns in Costa Rica.

3.0 out of 5 stars Helpful site guide; not a birding field manual., 25 Aug 1998
By A Customer
This is not a birding field guide, but a helpful guide to quite a few Costa Rica birding sites. Very good descriptions of sites included (including some information not available elsewhere) but many other places were not covered. The author's assessments are useful. Supplements other guides.

1.0 out of 5 stars For serious birdwatchers. No color photos, 28 Jul 1998
By A Customer
Lots of tables and descriptions of where to go to see birds. 99% Costa Rica. A few black and white drawing of birds, plants, maps. Not good if you want color photos of birds you might see.
