5.0 out of 5 stars Another five star read, 24 July 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
Feisty youngest daughter to English Baron Jamison, is essentially sold for a bride price to Scottish Laird Alec Kincaid. She wears black to her wedding which more or less reflects how she feels about the arrangement. Before she knows what has happened, she finds herself with her sister Mary, travelling to Scotland with a total, if very attractive stranger, who doesn't even seem to like her but is now her husband. Alec, of course not only likes her but has a hard time accepting that not only has Jamie found a way to his heart but can also so easily turn his ridged ideas of a woman's place, and marriage on its ear.

I really should stop giving Garwood novels five stars, but they are so very funny - Garwood can make me laugh out loud with the hilarious situations and sparkling dialogue. If her novels are character rather than event driven, there is still a little intrigue (in this case the question is who killed Kincaid's first wife and whether said killer will get to Jamie) to keep you turning the pages. The emphasis however remains on the tug of love between Kincaid and his new bride and the hilarious clashing of cultures. The humor doesn't detract from the really steamy love scenes and with an endearing array secondary characters (I would have liked more time with Mary(the heroine's sister) and her new husband Daniel) this really is an excellent book; I have no choice, it's a five star read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional romance novel- a credit to JG, 3 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
The bride had me laughing and crying all the way through, Jule Garwood has an exceptional sense of humour. I felt like I knew Jamie and Alec and it was obvoius from the begining the Alec was the one for Jamie. Jamie's temperment is very funny and you'll be in stitches at the way her husband reacts to her ways. Watch out for Annie! must read the wedding next- thats just as exhilerating.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best Garwood novel - full of clichés, disappointing, 25 Mar 2008
By Stella Balogh (Brussels, Belgium) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
This was the first Julie Garwood novel I have read, and I'm glad I still picked up another one after this because it would have been a pity to write off ulie Garwood because of this one novel.

I've picked up The Bride because of all the wonderful praises here at Amazon and because I love Highlander romances. But while reading this novel I kept asking myself if all the other persons have read the same book I was, because I didn't like it that much (or maybe they like it so much because they haven't been spoiled by superior novels..), anyway I have read far better Scottish romances, even from Julie Garwood (The Secret and The wedding come at mind instantly, both are way better than The Bride).

What I didn't like in this novel was mostly Jamie. She wasn't a very likeable heroine, she just irritated me.

The characterisations were shallow, ridiculous, the whole story and the characters were full of clichés, the turns were tiring and eye-rolling. Brr.. and I can say this seriously after reading 4 other Scottish romances from Julie Garwood, I don't see why people are so fond of The Bride when it is so inferior to her other ones. What I think is one of Garwood's best traits and her strength is the way she shows the relationships (between parents and children, sisters-brothers, friends and lovers) in such details, but not here: here she kept them shallow and lacking, they were so one dimensional and unsatisfying.

If you'd like a light, funny romantic read try rather The Secret or The Wedding, and don't bother with this one.
