5.0 out of 5 stars Respectful compassion, 13 Nov 2009
By J. Flaton (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Haiku (Hardcover)
This is a non-Burke novel (like "Two Trains Running"), and all the better for it. Not because Burke is Bad (well, in a way, he is), but sometimes you get the feeling that his man needs some respite from the relentless misery he's wading through. This, however, is just a tiny slice of a story, told by the protagonist, about a handful of homeless people, each of which needs to come to terms with the past. There is redemption, but never the easy way. There is a white Rolls Royce and something thrown in the water and the need to find out. There is a library that must be saved at all cost, and we follow these people on their tortuous quests.

The storyline is thin, but the story is rich in character. Vachss uses the same language as with his Burke novels, thus keeping any sentiments at bay, and leaving us with a handful of sharply portraits, drawn with a rough etching needle and a respectful compassion, in my eyes even better than in "Two Trains Running".

No Burke-mania this time, but a hell of a story. A compassionate story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Haiku, 22 Nov 2009
This review is from: Haiku (Hardcover)
Too much like Grasshopper does Down and Out, what with the hype on the Vachss site about signed copies when he is against the use of Internet buying.
