I read INDIGO hot on the heels of AQUAMARINE, another short Hoffman novel with the element of water as its central motif. I thought AQUAMARINE could not be equalled ; I was mistaken.This book is marvellous.

INDIGO concerns the two McGill boys and their friend Martha Glimmer. They live in a small American town nowhere near the sea. The boys are however rather. . .watery, possessing webbed fingers and toes and preferring fish to all other foods. Martha doesn't share these idiosyncrasies but she too is "different", an outsider. Their relationship is beautifully portrayed, as are the relationships with the other people in their lives.

The prose is measured but poetic. Once again, I come away from Alice Hoffman's work feeling that the world is a more extraordinary place than we might give it credit for.

Highly recommended.
