5.0 out of 5 stars The first of a celebrated 12-book series, 19 Nov 2008
By John Howard Reid (Wyong, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
Although it was actually published last overseas, this novel is actually the chronological first of the twelve full-length books featuring Merryll "Merry" Manning of the Miami police. Only one of these novels, "Dead Lucky" was published in the U.K. (The central character's name was changed to Jack Reid).

The novels attracted a great deal of attention when they were published in Australia. The Sunday Telegraph selected "The Last Generation" as the Best Novel of the Year -- not the best mystery of the year, nor the best Australian novel of the year, but the best novel of the year, full stop -- and almost all other reviews were equally over the top. Nationwide, only two critics out of the forty who reviewed the novel, were lukewarm.

For republication, it was decided to release the novels in their correct chronological order, although only Merryll Manning himself, and his girlfriend, Susan Alexis Devoro Ford, are continuing characters.
