A Pleasure To View!, 20 April 2009
As a silent and early talkie movie fan from way back, it was a pleasure to be asked to write this book and an even greater thrill to view many of these great classics for the first time on DVD. I've actually gone out of my way not only to view and re-evaluate all the familiar classics like "Tumbleweeds", "The Sheik", "The Three Musketeers", "The Phantom of the Opera", "Metropolis", "The Lost World", "Mark of Zorro", "The Kiss", "Lady Windermere's Fan", "Safety Last", "Robin Hood", "The Canary Murder Case", "Tess of the Storm Country", "The Cat and the Canary", etc., but to hunt out some really outstanding entertainments that are now available, even though they are not particularly well-known even to seeded fans like myself. Movies like "The Notorious Lady", "No Man's Law", "The Lighthouse by the Sea", "Hotel Imperial", "Evangeline", "Down to the Sea in Ships", "Bad Girl", "City Girl", and "Broken Hearts of Broadway". Of course, British cinema is not entirely neglected, although vintage films are hard to come by. I feature "The Return of the Rat" which starred Ivor Novello and Mabel Poulton, and Dr Paul Czinner's "The Woman He Scorned", filmed in Cornwall with Pola Negri and Warwick Ward.
