4.0 out of 5 stars The pace gathers more as the book goes on!, 16 May 2008
This review is from: The Finder (Paperback)
Intially it took me a while to get into this thriller. The complex nature of the sub plots involving dodgy information sales of corporate secrets took a little understanding, but when the core of the plot came together I thought the end result pretty excellent. I haven't read a bad book by Colin Harrison - some very harrowing situations and a strong central character are his formula but every book is worthwhile. There's a great climax here as the story lines converge too. I'm looking forward to his next publication.

3.0 out of 5 stars Readable literary thriller, 2 May 2008
By Ichabod J (Farleigh Wallop, Hampshire) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Finder (Paperback)
Harrison's thrillers are usually variations on the yuppie nightmare theme - ordinary Joes becoming enmeshed in corporate, usually violent, shenanigans. Like Tom Wolfe, there's often a collision of different worlds - with both high rollers and low life all out for what they can get.
There are several interconnected plotlines in this novel, the most prominent being that of square jawed ex-firefighter Ray Grant trying to find his Chinese girlfriend, Jin Li, before the bad guys get to her. This is more formulaic than some of Harrison's previous efforts but an enjoyable thriller nonetheless. As always, Harrison's elegant writing style elevates the novel above standard fare and gives a gloss to the sometimes brutal acts of violence he describes. Look out for a particularly inventive double murder in the first chapter involving raw sewage - definitely not how I want to go!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but something was missing...., 24 Nov 2008
By johnverp (Budapest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Finder (Paperback)
I like Harrison as an author and was very impressed with "The Havana Room" which was quite a different read. But I'm just not sure about `The Finder'.

We have a host of ingredients here : a document shredding company using business secrets, stock-market manipulation, Chinese and Mexican players, a setting in colourful NYC ...... and a sewage-disposal company which provides for some of the early action. Inevitably, we also have quite a wide cast of characters.

The book starts well as Harrison weaves the disparate threads in his first few chapters. And because Harrison writes so well the expectations remain high. The reader quickly forms the view that the strands will all come together very nicely.

For me though, there was just something missing here and I'm not sure I can put my finger on it - perhaps it was the absence of a real protagonist I could root for, although a somewhat troubled former fire-fighter and his ex-girlfriend do dominate the air-time; or perhaps it was the last, single chapter wrap-up.

This well-written book did suck me in pretty quickly but it seems to have built expectations which were too high because, in the end, I didn't close the book feeling it had been a truly fantastic read. In my view then, this was an average rather than sensational thriller. 7/10

3.0 out of 5 stars series of sketches for a novel
Harrison tries to vary his usual plot with sections of terrific writing as usual but not really an integrated work. Disappointing!
