5.0 out of 5 stars In the Beginning, 15 May 2005
This is where the Biography of Dom Manuel begins. I've read it many times, though not recently, so please foregive any inaccuracies. It is just that no one seems to review these books on Amazon and someone should.
This is a book of action, but there is much more to it than meets the eye. Many poems are hidden herein, and apparently many of the great religions are reviewed. Well, this is James Branch Cabell after all.
If any of his novels approach Lord of the Rings this is it, and I confess this is how I came to it. Here is wizardry, derring do etc., but this is not Tolkien, in fact I suspect he would have hated it because it is full of allegory and double meaning.
In the 13th century young Manuel the Swineherd is sat in the mud doing his very best to obey his mother and make himself a fine figure of a man. The eleven misshapen, muddy manikens he has produced are stood around him when a certain person first finds him. These are animated and sent across the ages, as poets, as related in 'The Certain Hour', one of whom is William Shakespear.
As for Manuel, he becomes determined to follow his own course and travel the world that he might judge it. Many adventuires follow until he becomes Dom Manuel, Redeemer of Poictesme, but the story goes on as it begun, full of hilarity and hidden meanings, but still a ripping yarn for all of that. This is the best of books and deserves many re-readings.
