This book is specified as the Database course textbook for the University of Liverpool MSc in IT, which is why I bought it.

It is an extremely comprehensive text and covers all the key areas of relational database technology in depth, with the exception of vendor specifics. It certainly exceeded the requirements of the course!

I have three criticisms which may be pertinent to you:
- The authors style is verbose: They do not cut to the chase and you can read a 60 page chapter but only learn as much as you would in a 20 page chapter in a different textbook.
- The text is dated: References to DEC VAX VMS and Windows '98, for example - does not inspire confidence and suggests it needs updating.
- The book is a monster: It is the same length and width as my laptop PC but twice as thick and at 2Kg is heavy to carry around. The layout of the book includes much white space and uses a large font - it really could do with reformatting for portability.

I highly recommend this book for software developers who are new to databases. It covers a wide range of database topics and provides lots of examples.

Designing databases is hard work and involves a lot of thinking. This books makes it easy. It's very explantory, uses real-life examples, and encourages the reader to do some studying on his own. However, I have to deduct one crown...the book would be even better if it came with a CD-ROM. Typing all examples by hand into my PC may be the right (and hard) way to learn, but it's tiring.
