Product Description

Product Description

The year is 1917. Following the sudden death of his Professor, a young man and his two companions are approached by a strange man who gives them a book to safeguard. This book, the Imaginarium Geographica, is the reason the Professor was killed, and now, they too are in mortal danger. Chased by the ferocious Wendigo, half-man half-werewolf creatures, the three companions seek refuge on a ship - a ship that leads them to the extraordinary lands of myth and legend mapped in the precious book they carry. As their adventure unfolds we learn that the friends are in fact C.S Lewis, J.R.R Tolkien and Charles Williams - and as they discover that events in the known world mirror those in the imaginary realm, they come to realise the importance of the Imaginarium Geographica , and if not protected, there will be no peace from the war that rages in our world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Here there be Maps and Dragons, 7 Jun 2008
Firstly, this is a great book. Based around three friends who are catapulted into another dimension, the story tells how they use a mystical map, called the 'Imaginarium Geographica', to navigate through the new world. The tale takes synchronicity to new limits. But hey, it works. I loved the slightly A C Doyle-like characters and the various races and monsters that fought to control the other world. I'm glad, though, that I did not read the synopsis on this site first. It would have spoiled the ending for me. Look away now and just press the 'buy now' button.

1.0 out of 5 stars A rag tag adventure, 7 Oct 2008

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This reads like the book of a film script rather than a novel. There is little back story, the plot is full of gaping holes and leaps from action scene to action scene with little explanation and the dialogue is weak and plays a distinct second fiddle to a penchant for wild chases and explosions.

The pace is fast, almost relentless in fact, and you find yourself pulled along by the story which means that it covers its tracks reasonably well. It's only when you find yourself asking 'how did we get here?' and 'Why did that happen?' that you realise that it is fairly thin on substance.

The book is an odd mish mash of fact, fiction, myth and fantasy. It borrows freely from everywhere you care to look in literature. If you haven't read Conan Doyle, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, H.G. Wells or Jules Verne you may miss a lot of the allusions. If you have you may find the borrowings clever, I just found them glib and annoying. I also thought the tone of the book was very uneven, see sawing between the blindingly obvious, the philosophically obtuse and some modern day humour which stood out like a sore thumb, such as the digs at editors for example.

A child might well find this exciting and fast paced, but unless they are a well read child they will miss layers of allusion, particularly concerning mythology and Genesis stories. An adult who can understand the allusions is probably going to be annoyed by the glaring holes in the story with characters wandering on and off 'set' for no apparent reason, little or no explanation given for certain actions or decisions and the excruciating dialogue which invariably adds nothing to the plot and goes nowhere and just seems to be there to fill in the holes between battles.

A poor book at almost every level. A shame it has such pretensions to grandeur.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily the best book I've read all year, 13 Dec 2007
This review is from: Here, There be Dragons (Hardcover)
This book was absolutely fantastic! As soon as I finished it I wanted to read it again but couldn't due to my family members stealing it! Once I worked out who I thought the three characters were (2 out of 3 right) I would give myself a little pat on the back for each reference to their books I found! A brilliant book and totally original idea I just hope the second one is as good - it has a lot to live up to! This book is given pride of place on my bookcase!! I definately recommend this to all ages!
