Product Description

Product Description

Lump, the ugliest boy in the world, is abandoned in the forest, where he is found and taken in by a witch. With a bear for a nanny, a genie as a servant and only a cat to talk to, the household is a strange one, but Lump grows up knowing nothing but love. Until one day he has to go out and face the world - and meets rejection at every turn. This is the story of Lump's difficult journey to adulthood, his craving for the magical powers of his mother, and his search for love and acceptance, set against the backdrop of a world full of natural magic in delicate balance, where the slightest disturbance can be catastrophic.

About the Author

After an English degree and work as an editor, Michael Gruber studied marine biology, spent time in the Army as a medic, received a Ph.D. for a study of octopus behaviour and was then a chef and a roadie before entering the civil service, a career that took him to Washington. It was there that he began ghost-writing a bestselling series. He has published two novels under his own name, Tropic of Night (03) and Valley of Bones (05). He is married, with three grown-up children and an extremely large dog.

This review is from: The Witch's Boy (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book. It is a wonderfully touching tale of an ugly abandoned baby boy who is taken in by a witch. In his early years he is surrounded by people who love him. However, when he goes out into the world he is abused because of his looks.

The story is cleverly written around well known fairy tales.

2.0 out of 5 stars Average, not as enchanting as you would expect..., 8 Sep 2009
This review is from: The Witch's Boy (Paperback)
I purchased this book because amazon recommended it based on previous purchases. All of the ingredients for an amazing tale are there: great characters, interesting backdrop, travel and adventure. However the main character is simply not likeable, nor is he redeemable. By the time you finish the story you feel wholly unsatisfied, and grateful it is over. From previous comments it would appear that the reader started the book, but did not finish it. Yes, lump is a physically ugly orphan taken in by a witch. There is no moral to the story, no lesson learned. He is born a ugly on the outside and he finishes ugly on the inside as well. I cannot recommend this book to anyone.
