Book Description
Nick is dying. Barney spends much of his time keeping him company, helping him to lead an almost normal life and sharing his carefully guarded secret. The two boys often go down to the old harbour to look at the boats and take photographs.

Barney finds it hard, watching his friend getting weaker and weaker. He worries about his realtionship with his first real girl friend. He worries about his school work.He is under pressure to perform well as a county swimming champion. And he needs a part-time job.

Everything seems to be working out - just - when what he ahs most been dreading happens. All the other things which can go wrong do so spectacularly. Then there is a strange-shaped room, some ham and mustard sandwiches and a few conversations with a wise old sailor.

From the Author
Nick's Gallery tells the story of how Barney comes to terms with his grief after his friend, Nick, dies of muscular dystrophy. Barney also has to face all the other usual problems, - trying to keep a part-time job, how to deal his first real girlfriend and all those pressures at school, not to talk of parents who are always trying to control things. Barney is really cut up after Nick dies and everything else which can go wrong does so dramatically. We watch him make his way through incredible pain, not deal with it very well …. and then find a way of accepting Nick's death without forgetting him.
This may help you to understand your own feelings if you have also lost someone, or to understand what is going on with a friend who has experienced something similar. Hopefully, you will also grow to love Barney and Nick just as I did when I wrote about them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful characters & pace, 29 Jul 2004
By A Customer
I'm not usually a fan of teen literature but I thought this book was incredibly good. Somehow the author drew me right into the story from the start and I couldn't put it down. The emotions and actions balance is perfect, and the main characters, Nick and especially Barney, are wonderful. At the end it was a rollercoaster storm of powerful emotion without being in any way sentimental, and the ending is immensely satisfying.

This is better by far than other teen literature currently on the market and indeed I would recommend it wholeheartedly for an adult audience as well. In short, the perfect crossover book (at least for this reader!) and I have no idea why it hasn't yet found a mainstream publisher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nick's Gallery review, 19 May 2004
By Sarah Merrett (Hampshire, England) - See all my reviews
This is the story of a boy struggling to cope with the pressures of teenage life, set against the extraordinary life of his best friend, a feisty boy dying of Muscular Dystrophy. The main character, Barney, is an emotionally and physically strong boy who contrasts well against his friend. Nick can only imagine the life he dreams of sailing the ocean, and instead paints the boats in the harbour with surprising skill.

It is a well paced story, leaving the reader gripped throughout, tensely awaiting the unbearable but inevitable to happen. But this is no typical sentimental story of death and tragedy but one that perfectly captures the emotions of grief with gritty realism. The story has heart-wrenchingly sad scenes interspersed with moments of elation. The emotions build to a wonderful release at the climax. This is a refreshing story that tackles death head on, leaving the reader feeling lifted and positive. Well worth reading!
