Product Description

Product Description

By the mid-1930s, cinema patrons insisted on value-for-money. Double feature programs became mandatory at all neighborhood cinemas. Usually the "A" feature film figured as the main attraction, and the supporting movie, the "B". Sometimes that role was reversed. On many occasions picturegoers felt the unheralded "B" movie had actually proved more entertaining than the widely advertised "A" attraction. More than two hundred of these wonderful "B" film classics from Hollywood's golden age are described, reviewed and detailed in this book. It's a must-have for all film addicts, movie fans and nostalgia connoisseurs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Guide for All "B"-Movie Fans!, 13 Dec 2008
By John Howard Reid (Wyong, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
Most "B" movies fall into one of five categories. In order of quantity: westerns, mysteries and crime, comedies, action and adventure, domestic dramas. In this book, I have mostly provided details and reviews of movies in the first three groups. Around 80 westerns, 70 mysteries and 40 comedies, to be precise. I'm a great fan of the "B" western. My childhood heroes were Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Buck Jones, Bill Elliott, Hoot Gibson, William Boyd, John Wayne and Charles Starrett. I didn't meet up with my favorite western hero, Ken Maynard, until his movies were aired on TV. So, as in my other books on this subject such as Movie Westerns: Hollywood Films the Wild, Wild West and BEST WESTERN MOVIES: Winning Pictures, Favorite Films and Hollywood "B" Entries, I have tended to concentrate on these stars.

In the mystery category, I've made sure to include Sherlock Holmes as well as three of the finest "B" thrillers ever made: "Journey into Fear", "Miss Pinkerton" and "Kid Glove Killer". On the domestic front, we have a selection of the best "Blondie" entries, plus movies like the charming "Housewife" (1934) in which Ann Dvorak plays the title part, while Bette Davis (in one of her rare, unsympathetic roles) enacts the femme fatale. (Needless to say, Davis hated the movie, although she was never more beautifully made up, seductively costumed and lustrously photographed).

As in my other books, all 200 films are alphabetically arranged for easy reference, and all are provided not only with up-to-date reviews, but complete casts, credits, synopses and other essential background information.
