5.0 out of 5 stars Poems To Delight the Eyes!, 12 Dec 2008
By John Howard Reid (Wyong, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
I've always maintained that Poetry should not only sing to the ears, but delight the eyes as well. After all, our visual impression is our first impression. The ear only comes into play when we recite the poem aloud -- and often we don't do that at all! So the look of a poem is important to me. It should not simply reflect the same appearance as a block of prose. This said, a poem should also say something to the heart and stimulate an impression, a remembrance, an allied thought in the brain. First lines are most important. I was glad to find in my Index of such lines in this book, that almost every single one of these lines jogged my memory or my curiosity. Here are my opening lines from "P" through to "S": The page cannot be displayed; Perhaps when the beached moon is setting; Please cry out; Poor litter rich girl; Pull down blinds; Racing, that's the sport of kings; Retrieve the clock and set the time; Sighs sorrow the lapwing's song; Silent sentinels of the forge-lit sea; Softly film-star handsome; Sometimes when the sun is steeling; The sun slid square on his London town; Surprising the number of film buffs among clergymen.

In all, this is a varied collection of poems -- humorous, serious, nonsensical, picturesque, satirical, romantic, narrative, descriptive -- on various themes. Some of them have won prizes in prestigious contests, and I'm not going to deny that these, particularly "The Actor Deprived of His Voice", "Fence Falling Down" and "One Speaks for the Nine", number among my favorites too!
