The first few pages of this introductory volume to the "Hollywood Classics" series are taken up with a review of the book, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. My main complaint is that the book is unbalanced. While purporting to cover the years 1902 to date, only a quarter of the pages are devoted to the first half-century. This distortion has led to most of the cinema's greatest masters being excluded. So I have prepared my own list of the top four hundred pictures. All this, however, takes up only 12 pages of my book's 164. Aside from 26 pages of photographs, the bulk of this "New Light on Movie Bests" provides exhaustive information, including full cast and camera credits, on over 80 famous classic films, arranged alphabetically from "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" to "Young in Heart." With a handful of exceptions, every one of these vintage movies rates as a must-see. And fortunately, many of them like "The Third Man", "Gilda", "The Shepherd of the Hills", "The General", "Rose of Washington Square", "Duck Soup", "The Trouble with Harry", "The Old Dark House", "The Thin Man" series, "The Bat Whispers", "China Seas" and "Our Hospitality" are now available on DVD.
