5.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide for Writers Who Want To Win Literary Competitions, 6 Feb 2009
By John Howard Reid (Wyong, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
Having served my apprenticeship as a co-adjudicator in a number of minor literary events, I became judge of a leading short story competition and in due course I was invited to speak at various writers' seminars and conferences. It soon became obvious that most writers, no matter how gifted and talented, had absolutely no idea at all how to successfully enter contests and competitions. Almost to a man and woman, they had unwittingly set themselves up for bitter disappointments by failing to understand that the words, "all subjects and themes welcome" (and similar phrases to that effect) actually mean the very opposite to what they ostensibly imply. So I started to write this book to disentangle the real meaning of such rules, when I had the brainwave of putting my theories into practice by entering contests myself. There are no rules preventing judges entering other contests, so, over an 18-month period, I submitted entries to 80 contests, dividing them evenly between Australian contests (40) and overseas, which I split evenly into British and Irish (20), and the USA/Canada (20). I achieved four First Places, one Second, one Third, plus 22 Highly Commended and Commended citations. That's better than a one-in-three success rate, which I could have improved had I not submitted to a number of British and American contests in which I knew I had absolutely no chance of success, but wished to prove my theory that current "university ideals" of what constitutes prizewinning literature, has a greater sway over contests organized by publishers and literary societies in Britain and the USA than academia exerts in Canada and Australia. I was right. I placed first in only one British event, achieved zilch in the USA, but obtained four Canadian citations (two Highly Commended, two Commended). So, one of my prime rules is "Know Your Contest". But that's just Chapter One. There are at least nine other essentials that every intending literary contestant should be aware of, all explained in this essential guide which, I believe is the only such handbook written by a professional who is both a leading judge and a successful contestant.
