Product Description

Review

'Sports fans will be delighted... elegant and erudite, strikes a blow for the idea that sport can elevate human character'
--Ed Smith, Sunday Telegraph, Book of the Week

Review

'Almost impossible to read this book without wiping away a manly tear. A joy - a simple but brilliant idea executed with great skill and judgement'

5.0 out of 5 stars Good sportsmanship is alive and kicking, 24 April 2009
By Clive Viegas Bennett (Portugal) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Anyone with only superficial sporting interest like me gets the feeling that modern sport is all money, ruthlessness and cold-hearted aggression. Max Davidson's delightful book reminds us how wrong we can be. He selects over 50 moments of sporting chivalry from an eclectic range of sports (chess to golf, mountain climbing to rugby, not, of course, missing out on cricket and soccer) over a wide time span (three millennia, if you allow for his Homeric references). Davidson's romantic - no, operatically passionate - love affair with sport pervades every delicious vignette, every exuberant delight in the events he describes. He picks not only the most famous gestures - Jack Niklaus's astonishingly generous "gimme" to Tony Jacklin on the last putt of the 1969 Ryder Cup, Freddie Flintoff consoling Brett Lee at the end of 2005 Ashes series - but also does deep research to celebrate equally moving moments from the forgotten events of sporting history: the Egyptian judoka revered in Japan for his self sacrificing sportsmanship; the scrupulous honesty of a high school basketball coach in a small town in Georgia, US. Read Max Davidson book to feel good about sport again, to remind yourself that sport can be just that: not a business, not a heartless fight, just exhilarating, life-enhancing sport. Even, very occasionally, soccer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its not the winning that counts, 16 Jul 2009
For someone who is not particularly interested in sport this was a most pleasurable read because it was so beautifully written and each of the stories sucsinct and not belaboured.
