Product Description

Raymond Chandler

'This man Austin Freeman is a wonderful performer' --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Book Description

"...I strolled down to the Embankment, and, leaning on the parapet, contemplated the view across the river; the grey stone bridge with its perspective of arches, the picturesque pile of the shot-towers, and, beyond, the shadowy shapes of the Abbey and St. Stephen's. It was a pleasant scene . . . a barge swept down through the middle arch of the bridge with a lugsail hoisted to a jury mast and a white-aproned woman at the tiller. Dreamily I watched the craft creep by upon the moving tide, noted the low freeboard, almost awash, the careful helmswoman, and the dog on the forecastle yapping at the distant shore - and thought of Ruth Bellingham."

First published in 1911, The Eye of Osiris adds the charm of Old London to this fine detective story by R. Austin Freeman. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic English Mystery, 23 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Eye of Osiris (Paperback)
Although they have their enthusiasts, R Austin Freeman's novels and stories about Dr John Thorndyke remain regrettably unfamiliar to general readers. Swallowtail Books is to be congratulated for bringing out this gem of a novel in a relatively inexpensive (and elegantly designed) paperback. The story has all the delicious ingredients one expects: a lovely (and brainy) damsel in distress, her brave young admirer, a foul plot related to a will and the mysterious disappearance of the testator, Egyptian relics redolent of mystery, a dismembered body being found piece by piece by the police, and a brilliant denouement in which Thorndyke solves it all with the aid of the best science of the time -- that science, by seeming so antiquated today, adds to the period charms of the novel. The novel, in short, is a delight from beginning to end -- thank you, Swallowtail, and how about bringing out a few more Thorndykes?

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read from a 'new' author, 7 Jan 2008
By Customer "Jon" (Derbyshire) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Eye of Osiris (Paperback)
R. Austin Freeman was 'new' to me - I had not previously read any of his books. This book was written round about 1911 and set in 1904. It contains delightful descriptions of the London that Freeman was seeing around him. The story was quite relaxing - a gentle tale rather than a thrilling one. I have to say that I started to see the way the wind was blowing about two thirds of the way through, but this was a very enjoyable book full of atmosphere.

3.0 out of 5 stars A sloppy edition., 7 April 2008
This review is from: The Eye of Osiris (Paperback)
This edition does not do justice to the quality of the story. The publisher has failed to ensure that the Greek characters required in places have been used; instead they are replaced by complete gibberish. Also the standard of punctuation in and layout of the prolonged passages of conversation is poor and confusing.
