5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book! Full of atmosphere and intrigue!, 9 April 2009
This is a brilliant book! The atmosphere of 19th century London is fantastic. You really feel you're there, right down to the smells of the place. And Mary Quinn, the book's hero... well, she's awesome: hot-headed, argumentative and really brave.

She grew up poor, and turned to crime to survive. So she's hardly surprised when she's sentenced to death for stealing. The surprise comes when she's rescued from the gallows and given a second chance... as a trainee detective with the mysterious 'Agency'.

She soon ends up at the Thorold household, working as a servant (but really as a spy). The place is full of intrigue and dodgy dealings. It's there that she meets one of my favourite characters, the prickly engineer James Easton, who has his own reasons for snooping about the place. (I won't say any more because I don't want to spoil it.)

The story builds to the sort of climax that leaves you with sweaty palms at the end. Can't wait for books 2 and 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazingly gripping book, 22 Aug 2009
By R. Earl "dragongirl" (Bedfordshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Not one to usually read historical novels, i was a bit hesitant to begin with, but as soon as i started reading i was instantly hooked. The Victorian era setting was excellently portrayed and the characters were fantastic and seemed to come alive. Mary Lang is poor and caught for stealing, on the way to the gallows she is rescued by a lady impersonating a warden. Taken to Miss Scrimshaw's Academy for Girls, here she is given a second chance at life, an education and a home. However, the school is a front for a secret agency. When Mary turns 17, she is given a mission, to get into the Thorold's house hold and find out what Mr Thorold is up to, there are reports of dodgy dealings and fraud. Thrown into the household, Mary Lang becomes Mary Quinn, servant and companion to Angelica Thorold, Mr Thorold's daughter. Mary has to use every bit of courage, strength and cunning she has, but no-one mentioned that Angelica would be such a stuck up brat.
A thrilling story of intrigue, lies, friendship and scheming. I can't wait for the 2nd and 3rd book, wish i had them now.
A wonderful book, couldn't put it down.
